The Problem
A large MGA client site was experiencing extensive problems with
performance and robustness on their mission critical database.
The Solution
MGA EagleEye™ was installed to identify the problems and
tune the database.
MGA EagleEye™ soon established that the ad hoc reports running
on the database were seriously impacting online users' performance.
When the response times went up, MGA EagleEye™ would automatically
capture what was running and provide clear and documented evidence
of the cause of the performance issues.
These insights allowed a recommendation to be made to migrate to
a separate reporting server to take the load off the main database
server. Additional software, MGA Duplica™ allowed the client
to replicate from the current 8.0.3 production database to Oracle9i,
allowing the users to take advantage of the substantially improved
functionality of the new version.
Very impressed with the results, the client requested that data
be replicated from many applications to the reporting database using
MGA Duplica™. This solved the problem of users having to access
disjointed data across multiple databases.
The Outcome
Removing the report users off the main OLTP machine eliminated
the need for an expensive hardware upgrade, saving the company 400k.
What's more, it became possible to tune the reporting database to
provide the reporting users with performance superior to what they
were accustomed, and to dcliver a cost effective and efficient way
to manage their database.
